Summer came and went this weekend...



Soft Focus

An amazing insight into backstage shot by Mark Leibowitz. One of my favourite photographers, his fusion of blurred focus makes the Galliano models look like they're floating through some kind of dreamstate. Even more mesmerising than the shows, these images are just haunting. The little details that catch your eye become even more mysterious and fascinating than they are when shot in perfect vision. Breathtaking. Nice one, Leibowitz.

Suitcase living

With the winter sun setting early, my grey days have been limited somewhat with hours of daylight. As soon as I'm up and ready to go, it begins to get dark. It's the ever punishing inability to be productive in daylight that leads me working late into the night. Although blissfully, my days of work in this country are over, and I have spent many an hour of quality time with my kitty, making sure she knows I love her to pieces before I jet off and she worries for my whereabouts. I've told her my bed is hers, and she seems to be fairly happy with this. Packing is becoming somewhat of a chore, clothing choices being limited to the weather out there I find myself packing and unpacking, changing my mind at all stages. I have decided I will start a new blog, more of a diary so people at home can keep up with my adventures. I'll set that up within the next week or two, so keep a beady eye out! As for now, photo corner awaits you...

Bike Baskets.

Antonella Arismendi is doing some good things for fashion photography right now. Her back catalogue is extensive and I have just spent the best part of an hour swooning over her projects, from dusky motel innocence to beautifully dismal gothic, her versatile talent transcends many genres, which is why, I think, I have a major crush on this lady and her camera right now. All praise the Queen.

Shanghai Dreaming...

Way back in 2008 Dior collaborated with Chinese photographer Quentin Shih to produce a series of photographs entitles ''Stranger in the Glass Box'' - even the title gave me shivers. The images had an eery stuck in time feel to them, with every one carrying hints of the volatile history of the country. It was a fascinating twist on the usual super styled photography that adorns the pages of glossy magazines. It carried more depth and meaning that most. Two years later with Dior reopening the doors to their Shanghai fashion house, who better to call upon to capture the essence of their being than Shih. Slightly less arid and much more spellbinding, this series still captures the essence of how the photographer feels about modern Chinese culture. Retouching each and every still, Shih takes a typical Chinese stereotype and repeats it over and over to reinforce the rigor and uniformity of mass consumerism in the most beautiful of ways.

Explosure...

There was a book in the photography section of the library I always came across when doing research for a project. Named 'I Am Camera' I think the name always pulled me in. The photos from Tierney Gearon's childhood were stark and blocky and always the complete opposite to my work, and so I could never use her for inspiration. The concept behind her work however is ideal. Quite cathartic, she uses what she holds close her her heart as ways to process issues through photography, and I think this shows best in her latest project. Using only orignal non digital methods of working she exposes one reel of film in two different places to create layered image. Now these, I can use. Soft and pretty yet quite unnerving in it's subject matter, it puts me a little on edge, but I find them fascinating. Everyone loves imperfection, its quite beautiful.

How Whymsical...

By gum, Jeurgen Teller you have done it again, another flawless Marc Jacobs campaign. He captures the careless girly luxury of the Fall 2010 collection effortlessly. The neutral tones, the airy materials and whimsy silhouettes are utterly dreamy, in the rural sense of the word. I've always loved these two as individual talents, and together they're a force to be reckoned with.

Travelsome...

Granted, I did take over 1000 photos myself whilst I was traveling but my lack of good SLR camera and photography skills in general (minus the mean Lomo pics) meant that I have album upon album of scenic snaps but nothing that truly sums up the overall feel of where I've been and how much I loved my time out there. Somewhat handily, Aaron Farley has visited all the places I've been, and taken some truly amazing shots. Thailand, California, Australia and New York feature heavily. Quite simply, I love his work, and the places we have been. So in his handwriting, here is a brief overview of my travels...
